Now that we’ve got a list of keywords to work with, we can start to optimize the page using Google Webmaster Tools Search Engine Optimization tools. Let’s see what we can do. Level 1: The Basic Application This is the initial level of optimization and is not very complicated. It’s the most basic and basic apps like this are the easiest to optimize. It’s the same process of getting the basics right that a user would normally follow, however it’s much less obvious. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. In this case I’m ranking for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) searches like “best video editing software”. You can search here yourself. Search on the site, and scroll down through the descriptions to the actions. Then you need to select each action individually from the list. Here I have the complete list of actions and I’ve set all of the filters to “No Match” to only show the most important results. This gives us the “best” result for my desired keyword. The screen looks very basic, but this is what I’m talking about. We need to do the basics right to start optimizing this page. It’s all a lot easier once you have a list of keywords, however you’re likely to see some SEO returns, so it’s an overall good idea to get started early. Level 2: Adding Additional Actions Adding additional actions and providing additional functionality is what we can improve the website with. Here I want to show the website ranking for these additional searches, which I’ve set to show the list of the most relevant results that have a much higher ranking. Search Engine Optimization Applications like Optimize or Search Engine Optimizer are the most common tools for adding additional searches, however there’s a whole range of tools that I’ll likely need to improve this further. Here I’ve added “Show me the top sites for Best Video Editing Software” as the search that I want to show. I’ve set the action to include results. I’ve also added filters, as you need to do to show only results that have a better ranking. This is an excellent example of the potential for adding even more functionality to a website and making it work for your business. There’s a whole range of tools that I’ll need to work with as I continue with the optimization. If you’re still not convinced that this is what’s needed to improve your site, then you can search and compare the top websites to show the most important results for your keywords. This will quickly show you which websites are ranking for your keywords, but also give you a list of those that are ranking much better. Here’s an example of what we would add to this page to show additional actions. I’ve set the filters to show results that have a greater ranking. I’ve added the filters to show results that have been updated and then I’ve added an application as a filter to show results from a specific application. The level 3 application will show any results that have a greater ranking. But the biggest part of it is the ranking and update filtering and changing this will really help you show the results that are ranking better. There’s probably a lot of potential to build applications here, as you’ll be able to quickly show the results that are ranking well, or that have been updated. This can be a great way of showing results that are more relevant to your website and business. Level 4: Monitoring Monitoring will continue to improve the rankings on your website, as you start to look at the time it takes for your website to reach the top. This can vary as the time that it takes to get traffic can vary greatly. We’re looking at the time that it takes to get traffic, but it’s important to look at what the time is to get a search from the search engine that you’re targeting.
